Could The Bahamas Be Your Ideal Luxury Vacation Destination?

The Bahamas is not just an Island, but a ´Country of 700 Islands´! It is not just one destination, but many, ranging from the famous Grand Bahama with it´s capital Freeport, through Cosmopolitan Nassau to the desert-like wildlife sanctuary of Inagua. The Bahamas were a British Colony (on and off) since 1647, but in 1973 became an independent Commonwealth, retaining Queen Elizabeth II as their head of state.

There can be no doubt that The Bahamas are spectacular and wonderful islands. Like many other return visitors from around the world - You could become addicted to it for life! The great writer and fisherman Ernest Hemingway called the Bahamian island of Bimini home. Could a luxury vacation on Bahamas be the ideal fit for You?

The 30 or so inhabited Islands and thousands of uninhabited islets and cays (pronounce "keys") are at the birthplace of the Gulf Stream. This weather phenomenon accounts for the astonishing variety and abundance of marine life. The Bahamas claim more than 5% of the Earth´s coral reef mass, as well as one of the world´s largest underwater cave systems, offering exceptional pleasures and challenges to snorkelers and divers. The natural beauty of the water extends to the thousands of miles of shoreline.

Each Bahamian Island has a different history, creating a wealth of choice for the visitor. Whether you want to relax on gorgeous white sandy beaches, snorkel or dive in the clear blue waters, see where Christopher Columbus landed in 1492 or shop and take in nightclubs and casinos... there is so much to do, at your pace - the Bahamas can be your ideal luxury vacation destination.

Geographic Coordinates: 24°15"N, 76°00"W

Several airlines provide frequent flights to Nassau on New Providence, Freeport on Grand Bahama. Regional airlines and boats also provide transportation between many of the islands (more here). Flights from Europe to The Bahamas are available via Miami, Florida.

Bahamas Climate & Weather

Bahamas Weather

Current Conditions
Nassau - Bahamas

The Bahamas´ weather is tropical, with very little seasonal change. January´s high is around 77F with July´s at 88F. The lowest low is around 65F in February. The gentle Trade Winds keep you comfortable all day - but don´t forget to use sunscreen. The rainy season (May to November) is not a problem, with short tropical storms.

The risk for hurricanes is low, so the summer is not off limits, when the water temperature is like bathwater!

Bahamas Language

The Bahamas´ offical language is English - more British than American. Bahamians actually speak a mixture of The Queen´s English with African influences and many island idioms - "dayclean" meaning "daybreak".

Bahamas Currency

$US Currency

The Bahamas´ official currency is the Bahamian Dollar (BSD or B$). B$1 equates to $US1 and $US currency is accepted everywhere on the Bahamas. Most establishments accept all major credit cards. Banks can also exchange other foreign currency. Traveler´s checks are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants and stores, but personal checks are less welcome.

Bahamas Food

Seafood, in particular Conch (pronounced ´Konk´), is a staple of Bahamian cuisine and should be sampled. Bahamian food is never bland, using spices, to uniquely flavor local meats and produce with a South American influence. However, almost any international food can be found on the islands.

Both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks are a specialty in The Bahamas. Bars take pride in making their own concoctions, often using rum punch. Kalik is the common beer of the Bahamas and is very refreshing after a hot day. Another great refreshing drink is Coconut Water (not to be confused with coconut milk) blended with sweet milk and gin. Switcher, made with native limes is also a very cooling citrus drink.

High-end places to eat include (in alphabetical order) Chez Willie, (French/Bahamian food in Nassau); Red Lion Pub, (Caribbean on Bimini); Touch of Class, (Caribbean on Great Abaco); Villa d´Este, (Italian on Paradise Island)...

Inside Advice - The Bahamas´ fine restaurants certainly offer a gourmet dining experience, but you can also find great food for significantly fewer B$.

For example, the following places have a reputation for great food and good value: Anchorage, (Caribbean food on Eleuthera); Barracuda´s, (International on Grand Bahama); Blue Marlin, (Seafood on Paradise Island); Café Matisse, (International in Nassau); and many more...

Bahamas Accommodation

If you want to rub elbows with the rich and famous the Bahamas can offer you a bewildering choice of very expensive luxury hotels and resorts. You´ll also find plenty of less expensive hotels, guesthouses, vacation apartments to stay at.

Atlantis Luxury Resort, Bahamas

Notable luxury accomodations include:
Atlantis Resort & Casino (pictured left) and also One&Only Ocean Club Resort (both on Paradise Island), 4 Seasons Resort Emerald Bay (Great Exuma island), Kamalame Cay Resort, Pink Sands Resort (Harbour Island), and Sandals Royal Bahamian Hotel (New Providence island).

Inside Advice - If you want a true luxury vacation but with with more privacy, tranquility, and personal space than the luxury resorts offer - a luxury vacation home rental may be your best bet. In the Bahamas, you can rent an entire beachfront luxury villa, with your own private pool, and save money!

Things To Do In The Bahamas - Recreation & Entertainment

Take Your luxury vacation in The Bahamas and experience the ultimate:

Bahamas´s Beaches & Waters

There are so many Islands in the Bahamas, the people refer to the more remote Islands, such as Andros, Bimini and Eleuthera as The ´Out Islands´. Don´t confuse ´remote´ with boring, these ´Out Islands´ are home to some of the world’s most stunning beaches, dive sites, and fishing sites. Scuba Divers from around the world choose to vacation in the Bahamas, and return year after year.

The Bahamas offer literally hundreds of miles of tropical shoreline - mostly pristine, white, soft-to-the-touch sandy beaches. There are two types of beaches - the activity beach and - the deserted beach. An activity beach, such as Cable Beach in Nassau has everything you could imagine available from watersports & beach sports, to bars and restaurants. However, more than 80% of the beaches of The Bahamas are isolated and deserted - no crowds or motorboats, just miles of virgin warm sand and surf under your bare feet.

Bahamas Beach

The Bahamas´ clear warm waters and cooling trade winds make them a watersports paradise for anyone, novice or expert, interested in: deep sea fishing, parasailing, sailing/boating, snorkeling & scuba diving, windsurfing, kayaking, humpback whale watching...

You can swim, snorkel or fish at the beach or take a boat trip to scuba-dive on pristine reefs and wrecks in deeper waters.

Charter a sail boat or powerboat and visit one of The Bahamas´ reefs, or go island-hopping. Charter a fishing boat and learn how to catch large gamefish, or take a romantic cruise.

Ashore On Bahamas

You´d expect to find fabulous restaurants, shopping, sightseeing, churches, museums, spas, casinos, nightclubs... But how about taking an Eco-Adventure tour, visiting one of the Bahamas´ 12 National Parks, spotting the endangered Bahamian Rock Iguana, the Cat Island Terrapin, or a nesting colony of the Bahama Parrot.

Similarly, The Bahamas offer an excellent array of sporting activities, including biking, golf, horseback riding, tennis... almost anything you can think of.

Come ashore on The Bahamas and experience it all.

Transport In The Bahamas

Whether staying at Nassau, or on Grand Bahama, or on one of the ´Out Islands´, you may choose to visit other islands during your stay. BahamasAir and Charter Companies operate regular flights to all major ´Out Islands´. For those wanting to set their own schedule, private airplanes are also available for hire. ´Out Island´ Mail-boats operate between the islands and are a great way to travel - so long as you are ready to operate on ´Bahamas Time´ - at a more leisurely pace. Relax, you´re on vacation!

The major Bahamas Islands offer bus services, and taxis, as convenient modes of transport, but car rental is also available from several major carriers at reasonable rates. As in the UK, in the Bahamas you drive on the left! Freeport on Grand Bahama offers a "Get-A-Round Bus Pass". Nassau offers Horse-Drawn Surreys for the more romantically inclined.

Bahamas Electricity

Like the USA & Canada, mains electricity on The Bahamas is 120V alternating at 60Hz.

Bahamas Size

The Bahamas is composed of about 30 inhabited islands, hundreds of uninhabited islands, and thousands of islets and cays. The Bahamas Islands cover about 5,400 square miles of area.

Bahamas Population & Demographics

The Bahamas is home to about 303,770 happy and welcoming people. For Bahamas population demographics click here

Bahamas Stamp

Bahamas Economy

Although tourism is the by far largest industry in the Bahamas, the Bahamian economy is also fueled by offshore banking and investment activities, with large ´no tax´ incentives.
